How this asphalt calculator works
Asphalt sells by the ton but gets specified by the inch, so the math is volume × density — at the compacted thickness the roller leaves behind:
tons = volume × 145 lb/ft³ ÷ 2,000 · + waste, up to the ¼ ton
The 145 lb/ft³ figure is the industry’s compacted hot-mix estimating standard, the 5% allowance covers handwork and edge waste, and the order rounds up to the quarter ton a plant will actually ticket. At the defaults — a 40 × 10 ft driveway, 3 in compacted — that’s 7.75 tons and about $775; the full line-by-line math is in the load math section below.
What’s under an asphalt driveway?
An asphalt driveway is a flexible pavement: the mat you see is 3 inches of wear surface, and the strength lives in the compacted stone below it. From the dirt up:
Subgrade
Native soil, stripped of topsoil and compacted. Asphalt telegraphs everything — a soft spot in the subgrade becomes an alligatored patch in the mat within a couple of winters. Wet clay sites want geotextile fabric between dirt and stone.
Stone base
4–8 in of compacted dense-grade aggregate is the structural half of the pavement, placed in lifts and plate-compacted. Size the stone order with the road base calculator — it carries the compacted density the base is actually bought at.
Binder and surface courses
Thick commercial pavements go down in two lifts: a coarse binder course for depth and a fine-graded surface course for the finish. A 3 in residential driveway is usually a single surface-course lift; past 4 in, ask the paver to split it.
The mat and the roller
Hot mix arrives around 300°F, gets spread by paver or lute, and everything depends on rolling it before it cools — compaction is what turns loose mix into pavement. The inch the roller squeezes out is why this calculator works in compacted depth, not loose.
Edges, aprons and transitions
Unsupported asphalt edges are the first thing to crumble: plan 45° shoulder tapers, backfilled edges, or curbs. Where the driveway meets the road, the apron may be governed by the municipality — sometimes literally their pour.
Hot mix, cold patch or millings?
Hot-mix asphalt is the real pavement; everything else on the menu is either a repair product or a budget substitute. What each one is for:
- Hot-mix asphalt (HMA): plant-batched at ~300°F, laid by crews in the warm season — the driveway standard this calculator prices.
- Warm-mix asphalt: the same pavement batched ~50°F cooler with additives; extends the season and hauls farther. Spec’d by the plant, priced like HMA.
- Cold patch: bagged repair mix that never needs heat — for potholes and utility cuts, not surfaces. It stays soft; don’t pave with it.
- Millings (RAP): ground-up recycled pavement that compacts into a budget surface and re-binds in summer heat — the cheap long-lane answer.
- Sealcoat: not asphalt at all but the maintenance coat over it — first application the season after paving, then every 3–5 years.

How to measure a driveway for asphalt
Measure the pavement you’ll actually roll — flares, aprons and parking pads included. Dimension fields take feet-inches (40, 40 ft 6 in) or metric (12 m).
- Measure length and width of the main run. A curved lane measures along its centerline; width stays width.
- Add the extras as rectangles — the flare at the road, the walk-out pad, the basketball key — and total them with the square footage calculator or run each separately.
- Set the compacted depth: 3 in for a new residential surface, 2 in only as an overlay on sound pavement, 4 in and up where trucks park.
- Leave waste at 5% — handwork at edges and transitions eats mix; raise it on jobs with lots of curves and cut-ins.
- Enter the plant’s price per ton and note their minimums — many plants have a 2–5 ton floor or a small-load surcharge.
- Sanity-check with coverage: the live line under the drawing shows what one ton spreads at your depth — if the tons feel wrong, the depth usually is.
Worked example: asphalt for a 400 ft² driveway
The defaults, worked line by line — 40 × 10 ft at 3 in compacted, 5% waste, $100 a ton:
volume = 400 × (3 ÷ 12) = 100 ft³
weight = 100 × 145 = 14,500 lb = 7.25 tons exact
waste = 7.25 × 1.05 = 7.61 → order 7.75 tons (¼-ton rounding)
cost = 7.75 × $100 = $775
Cross-check it from the coverage direction: one ton covers 55 ft² at 3 in, and 400 ÷ 55 ≈ 7.3 tons before waste — same answer. Note what the estimate is: the mat only. The stone base under it is a separate tonnage (often a comparable one), and the paving labor typically costs more than both materials together.
What this asphalt estimate doesn’t include
The calculator prices the hot mix on the trucks. A paved driveway spends at least as much below and around the mat:
- Excavation and grading: cutting the lane to depth, hauling spoil, shaping the crown and fall.
- The stone base: 4–8 in of compacted dense-grade — commonly a tonnage rivaling the asphalt itself.
- Geotextile fabric: on soft or wet subgrade, the cheap layer that keeps the base out of the mud.
- Paving labor and equipment: paver, rollers, crew and mobilization — the reason installed jobs run $7–13/ft² against a dollar-something in mix.
- Tack coat: the adhesive spray between an overlay and old pavement.
- Edge support: shoulder backfill, tapers or curbing so the mat edge doesn’t crumble.
- Sealcoating: the following season and every 3–5 years after — maintenance, not construction.
- Permits and aprons: many municipalities permit driveway work and control the apron at the road.

How much asphalt do I need for a 400 square foot driveway?
7.75 tons at 3 in compacted depth — 100 ft³ of mat weighs 7.25 tons exact, and 5% waste rounded up to the quarter ton the plant sells lands at 7.75. At $100 a ton that is about $775 in hot mix.
How many tons of asphalt are in a cubic yard?
Just under 2 — compacted hot mix runs about 145 lb/ft³, which is 3,915 lb or 1.96 tons per cubic yard. The calculator works in compacted volume, so its tonnage already reflects the rolled-out thickness, not the loose windrow.
How thick should an asphalt driveway be?
3 inches of compacted hot mix is the residential standard over a proper base; 2 inches only works as an overlay on sound existing pavement, and 4 inches or more belongs where trucks and RVs park. The base does the structural work — plan 4–8 inches of compacted stone under the mat.
How much area does a ton of asphalt cover?
About 55 ft² at 3 inches compacted. Thinner goes further — 83 ft² at 2 inches — and thicker eats it: 41 ft² at 4 inches. The coverage line under the drawing recomputes for whatever depth you set.

Hot mix runs roughly $100–200 per ton from the plant in 2026, so the default 400 ft² driveway is about $775 in material. Paved, rolled and based by a crew, expect $7–13 per square foot installed — access, base repair and mobilization move the number more than the mix does.
Can I pave an asphalt driveway myself?
Realistically, no — hot mix leaves the plant around 300°F and must be spread and rolled before it cools past roughly 185°F, which is under an hour of working time and demands a paver and roller. DIY asphalt means cold-patch repairs, or a compacted millings driveway laid with rented plate equipment.
What temperature do you need to pave asphalt?
Mix arrives at about 275–325°F and compaction has to finish before the mat cools below roughly 175–185°F. Most specs want the air 50°F and rising with a warm base — which is why plants close in winter and paving season tracks the weather, not the calendar.
Are asphalt millings good for a driveway?
Yes, as a budget surface: recycled millings cost $10–30 a ton, compact hard, and re-bind in summer heat into a near-solid mat. They will not match true hot-mix pavement — expect some raveling at the edges and plan to top up ruts — but per dollar they beat gravel for dust and mud.
