How this limestone calculator works

Crushed limestone sells over a scale, so the estimate is volume × density with the gradation setting the density:

tons = yd³ × 1.35 (#57) × (1 + waste%) → rounded up to ¼ ton

Limestone gradations and what each is for

“Crushed limestone” comes in a size ladder from powder to boulders, and the size decides the job — pick by function, and the density preset follows:

  • Screenings (dust) — 1.4 t/yd³: the powder-to-⅛ in fines that pack near-solid. The setting bed under pavers and flagstone, and a hard-packing path topping.
  • #8 (⅜ in): small clean stone for walkways and pipe bedding — walkable and drains.
  • #57 (¾–1 in) — 1.35 t/yd³: the workhorse driveway top course and drainage stone. Clean, angular, stays put under tires. The calculator’s default.
  • #3–#4 (1–2 in) — 1.3 t/yd³: big base stone for the bottom lift over soft ground and around culverts; more voids, so a touch lighter per yard.
  • Rip-rap (3 in+): armor stone for erosion control — sized by the ton on the rip-rap calculator.

How deep should crushed limestone be?

Depth is the input that moves the tonnage most, and for limestone it’s also a thin-over-thick rule: the clean top course goes on shallow, the compacting base goes on deep, and the two never swap. What each job wants:

  • Paths & decorative beds: 2–3 in of #57 or screenings over landscape fabric.
  • Driveway top course: 2–3 in of #57 over a compacted base — never one deep loose lift, which just ruts.
  • Driveway base: 4–6 in of #3–#4 or crusher run below the top course; the road base calculator sizes that lift.
  • Paver setting bed: a 1 in screeded layer of screenings over the compacted base.
  • Drainage: 4–12 in of clean #57 around pipe and in French drains, no fines.

How to measure for crushed limestone

  1. Measure length and width of the area; total odd shapes with the square footage calculator.
  2. Set the depth by the job from the depth guide — the compacted top course, not the loose pile.
  3. Pick the gradation so the density is right — #57, screenings or large #3.
  4. Set the allowance: 5% for a decorative or top course, 10% for a base lift you’ll compact.
  5. Enter the quarry price per ton — limestone is cheapest where it’s local, so get a delivered quote.

Worked example: limestone for a 20 × 10 pad

The default, worked line by line — 20 × 10 ft, 3 in of #57 at 1.35 t/yd³, 5% waste, $40 a ton:

area = 20 × 10 = 200 ft²
volume = 200 × (3 ÷ 12) = 50 ft³ = 1.85 yd³
weight = 1.85 × 1.35 = 2.5 tons exact
waste = 2.5 × 1.05 = 2.625 → order 2.75 tons
cost = 2.75 × $40 = $110 · 1 ton covers 80 ft² at 3″

Screenings would weigh a hair more (1.4 t/yd³ → 2.59 tons exact), big #3 stone a hair less (1.3 → 2.41). The gradation moves the tonnage a few percent; the depth and the compacted-vs- loose call move it far more, which is why the top course goes on thin and over a base.

One more field note the math doesn’t show: limestone is cheapest where it’s quarried, so the same #57 that runs $30 a ton near an Indiana or Kentucky quarry can double by the time it’s trucked to a coast. What this limestone estimate doesn’t include

The calculator prices the stone on the scale. A finished driveway or path spends on the layers and site work around it too — budget these before calling the total done:

  • The base lift. #57 driveway stone rides on 4–6 in of compacted base — a separate order.
  • Delivery. A flat per-load haul fee plus any short-load minimum.
  • Geotextile fabric. Under stone on soft or clay ground to stop it pumping into the mud.
  • Compaction. A plate compactor for base and setting beds.
  • Edging. Restraint to keep loose #57 out of the lawn.
  • Grading and spreading. Shaping the crown and raking the stone flat.

The fines from crushing — under pavers and flagstone, as a path topping, and to tighten loose stone. They compact almost like concrete, which is exactly why they’re the classic setting bed for dry-laid stone.

Is limestone good for a driveway?

Yes — it is one of the most common driveway stones where it is quarried locally, because it compacts tight, sheds water and stays put under tires. In limestone country it is also the cheapest good option. The catch is dust in dry spells and some rutting without a proper compacted base, both fixed by building it in lifts.
