How this drywall calculator works

Drywall is an area takeoff: wall perimeter times height, plus the ceiling if you're doing it, minus openings — then whole sheets with waste, and the finishing materials keyed to the same area:

area = 2 × (L + W) × H − openings (+ L × W with the ceiling)
sheets = area × (1 + waste%) ÷ 32 · 4×8 sheet; 48 for 4×12

At the defaults — a 12 × 12 × 8 room with the ceiling on — that’s 19 sheets of 4×8, about $285, plus screws, compound and tape; the full chain is in the board math section below.

Drywall types and finishing materials

“Drywall” is a family of boards plus the mud, tape and fasteners that finish it. What goes where:

Board type and thickness

½ in regular board is the wall default; ⅝ in type X fire-rated board goes on ceilings and rated assemblies; moisture-resistant (green/purple) board goes in wet rooms, and cement board behind tile. Thickness is the price and weight lever, so match it to the framing spacing and the code, not habit.

Screws

Coarse-thread for wood studs, fine-thread for steel — about 32 per 4×8 sheet on 16 in framing, driven to a dimple without breaking the paper. That’s roughly one screw a square foot, the figure the calculator counts.

Joint compound (mud)

All-purpose ready-mix for taping and topping, or setting-type (“hot mud”) for a fast first coat. Figure a gallon per 100 ft² of board across a three-coat finish — the estimate here assumes a level-4 job.

Tape

Paper tape for flat and inside-corner joints, mesh for quick patches, metal or vinyl bead on outside corners. About 37 lf per 100 ft² of board against 250 ft rolls.

Corner bead and specialties

Outside corners take metal or paper-faced bead; archways take flexible bead. Small lines the sheet count doesn’t track but the cart needs.

How to measure a room for drywall

Measure the surfaces you’re covering, not the floor — walls are perimeter times height, and the ceiling is its own area.

  1. Measure the room length and width and the ceiling height — the calculator turns them into wall perimeter and ceiling area.
  2. Decide the ceiling — tick it on if you’re boarding it; it’s often the heaviest lift and the ⅝ in board.
  3. Subtract big openings. Total door and window area in the openings field — small rooms with a wide slider notice it, and hanging over-then-cutting handles the rest.
  4. Pick the sheet size: 4×8 for solo work and tight stairs, 4×12 for fewer joints when you have help and a path.
  5. Leave waste at 10%. Cutouts, tapered-edge offcuts and the odd cracked corner eat about that; raise it for a cut-up room.
  6. Read the finishing lines — screws, compound and tape come off the same area, so the whole cart lands in one trip.

Worked example: drywall for a 12 × 12 room

The default room, worked line by line — 12 × 12 × 8 ft, ceiling included, 10% waste, $15 a sheet:

walls = 2 × (12 + 12) × 8 = 384 ft²
ceiling = 12 × 12 = 144 ft² → total 528 ft²
+ 10% waste = 580.8 ft²
sheets = 580.8 ÷ 32 = 18.15 → 19 sheets ≈ $285
screws = 19 × 32 = 608
compound = 580.8 ÷ 100 = 6 gal · tape 1 roll

Switch to 4×12 sheets and the same 580.8 ft² needs just 13 — four fewer boards and, more to the point, fewer butt joints to tape and hide. That trade, weight and access against finishing time, is the one real decision on a drywall order. The finishing lines move with the board: 6 gallons of compound and a single 250 ft roll of tape cover this room’s seams, and the screw count barely shifts because it’s driven by sheet edges and field spacing, not the sheet size.

Hanging drywall in the right order

  • Ceilings first, so the wall sheets support the ceiling edges.
  • Perpendicular to framing and stagger end joints — butt joints in a straight line telegraph through paint.
  • Cut openings after hanging where you can: hang over doors and windows, then rout them out — fewer measured cuts, tighter fits.
  • ½ in board is standard for walls, ⅝ in for ceilings under trusses 24″ o.c. and anywhere fire code says so.
  • Keep butt joints off the tapered edges — factory-tapered seams hide flat; butt seams need a wider, feathered coat.

What this drywall estimate doesn’t include

  • Corner bead. Metal or paper-faced bead on every outside corner, by the stick.
  • Primer and paint. The finish over the board — the paint calculator handles gallons.
  • Texture. Knockdown, orange peel or skim — extra compound beyond the level-4 figure.
  • Backer board. Cement board behind tile is a different material and count.
  • Insulation and vapor barrier. What fills the cavity before the board goes up.
  • Lift and disposal. A panel lift rental for ceilings, and hauling the offcuts.
  • Labor. Hanging and — mostly — finishing; taping is the skilled, time-consuming half.

Drywall FAQ

How many sheets of drywall do I need for a 12 × 12 room?

19 sheets of 4×8, walls and ceiling, with 10% waste — 384 ft² of wall plus a 144 ft² ceiling. In 4×12 sheets it drops to 13. Subtract door and window area in the openings field before trusting either number.

How do I calculate drywall for a whole house?

Total every room’s wall and ceiling area, subtract the openings, and divide by the sheet size — or run each room through the calculator and add the sheet counts. A rough shortcut some estimators use is 3.5 × the home’s floor area in square feet, then divide by 32; the room-by-room takeoff is tighter.

How many screws per sheet of drywall?

About 32 per 4×8 sheet on 16 in framing — screws every 12 in in the field and 8 in on edges. That is one screw per square foot, so the default room runs about 610. Buy the 1¼ in coarse-thread box for ½ in board on wood studs.

How much joint compound per sheet of drywall?

Plan on about 1 gallon of ready-mixed compound per 100 ft² of board for a taped three-coat finish — roughly 6 gallons (a 5-gal bucket plus a pail) for the default room. Texture and skim coats add more.

What thickness of drywall should I use?

½ in is the wall standard; ⅝ in "type X" fire-rated board goes on ceilings under 24 in framing, on garage-to-house walls, and anywhere the fire code calls for it. ¼ and ⅜ in are for curved walls and skim-over work. Moisture- and mold-resistant board belongs in bathrooms; cement board goes behind tile.

Should I use 4×8 or 4×12 drywall sheets?

4×12 means fewer joints to tape — the default room drops from 19 sheets to 13 and loses several butt joints — but the sheets weigh ~50% more and need two sets of hands and a clear path in. Solo DIY rooms usually run 4×8; crews run 12s.

What are the drywall finish levels?

Level 0 to 5, set by the Gypsum Association. Level 4 — tape, three coats and sanding — is the standard for flat and eggshell paint. Level 5, a full skim coat, is for gloss paint and raking light. Garages and closets often stop at level 2 or 3. The compound estimate here assumes a level-4 finish.
