How this flooring calculator works
Flooring sells by the box, not the square foot — so the math is area with waste, rounded up to whole boxes at the coverage printed on the carton:
boxes = buy area ÷ box ft², rounded up · underlayment = area ÷ 100/roll
At the defaults — a 16 × 13 ft room, 20 ft² boxes, underlayment on — that’s 12 boxes (240 ft² bought), about $720, plus 3 rolls of underlayment; the full chain is in the box math section below.
Flooring types and what goes under them
Most click-together floors count the same way — by the box — but they differ in price, durability and what they need underneath:
Luxury vinyl plank (LVP/LVT)
The waterproof click-floor that took over kitchens and basements. Most ships with an attached pad, so no separate underlayment — untick the box. Durable, forgiving of subfloor, the DIY default.
Laminate
A photographic wear layer over a fiberboard core — cheap and tough underfoot, but the core swells if water sits, so it wants a foam underlayment and dry rooms. The default room’s 3 underlayment rolls assume bare-bottom laminate.
Engineered hardwood
Real-wood veneer over a plywood core — the look of hardwood with more dimensional stability, floating or glued or nailed. Underlayment depends on the method and the subfloor.
Solid hardwood
Nailed to a wood subfloor and sold by the square foot in bundles rather than coverage boxes; figure the same area-plus-waste, and expect more waste from racking and board culling.
Underlayment and transitions
Foam or cork underlayment under bare-bottom planks (100 ft² a roll), a moisture barrier on concrete, and T-molding, reducers and stair nose at every doorway and edge — separate lines the box count doesn’t carry.
Acclimation and expansion
Wood and laminate move with humidity, so most makers want the boxes stacked in the room for 48–72 hours before install and a ¼–⅜ in expansion gap left at every wall. Neither changes the box count, but skipping the gap buckles a floor — leave it, and cover it with the baseboard and quarter-round.
How many boxes of flooring by room size?
Table 1 runs common rooms through the engine at a 20 ft² box; Table 2 is the waste band by layout — the one input people set wrong.
| Room | Area | Boxes |
|---|---|---|
| 10 × 12 | 120 ft² | 7 |
| 12 × 14 | 168 ft² | 10 |
| 16 × 13 | 208 ft² | 12 |
| 20 × 16 | 320 ft² | 18 |
| Layout | Waste |
|---|---|
| Large simple rectangle | 5% |
| Typical room | 10% |
| Diagonal / herringbone | 15% |
| Many closets & jogs | 15% |
How to measure a room for flooring
Measure the floor you’re covering, pick the waste to the layout, and let the box coverage do the rounding.
- Measure length and width to the longest points, running into closets and doorways where the floor continues.
- Odd room? Split into rectangles and total them with the square footage calculator, then enter the sum.
- Set the waste by layout — 5% big and simple, 10% typical, 15% diagonal or cut-up — from Table 2.
- Enter the box coverage off the carton; it varies, and it’s what the box count divides by.
- Untick underlayment for attached-pad LVP and glue-down; leave it on for bare-bottom laminate.
- Buy it all from one lot — the extra boxes are your dye-matched repair stock for the life of the floor.
Worked example: flooring for a 16 × 13 room
The default room, worked line by line — 16 × 13 ft, 10% waste, 20 ft² boxes at $3/ft², underlayment on:
buy = 208 × 1.10 = 229 ft²
boxes = 229 ÷ 20 = 11.44 → 12 boxes = 240 ft² bought
underlayment = 208 ÷ 100 = 2.08 → 3 rolls
cost = 240 × $3 = $720
Notice the cost is figured on the 240 ft² you actually buy, not the 208 you cover — whole boxes always overshoot, and that overshoot (32 ft² here) is the repair stash you’ll be glad of when a plank gouges in year three. Underlayment, by contrast, is figured on the bare room area, since you don’t pad the offcuts. If your box coverage differs from 20 ft² — and it usually does — enter the carton’s real number, because a 23.6 ft² box and a 17 ft² box give very different counts over the same floor.
What this flooring estimate doesn’t include
- Transitions and trim. T-molding, reducers, stair nose and quarter-round at every edge and doorway.
- Moisture barrier. 6-mil poly over concrete slabs under floating floors.
- Subfloor prep. Leveling compound, patch and any subfloor repair — the make-or-break step.
- Demo and disposal. Tearing out the old floor and hauling it off.
- Adhesive or fasteners. Glue for glue-down, cleats or staples for nail-down.
- Door undercuts. Trimming door bottoms and jambs for the new floor height.
- Labor. Installation — floating floors are DIY-friendly; glue and nail-down are more.
Flooring FAQ
How much flooring do I need?
Room area plus waste, bought in whole boxes: a 16 × 13 ft room is 208 ft², 229 ft² with 10% waste — 12 boxes at 20 ft² a box, which puts 240 ft² in the house. The spare pieces are your repair stock.
How do I measure a floor for flooring?
Length × width for a rectangle; break L-shaped and odd rooms into rectangles, figure each, and add. Measure into closets and doorways where the floor runs, and to the longest points of the walls. Then let the waste factor cover the cuts — the room total is the number to buy against.
How much waste should I add for flooring?
10% for a typical room, 5% for big simple rectangles, and 15% for diagonal or herringbone lays and rooms full of closets and jogs. Plank floors always lose material at row ends — the waste chip sets it in one tap.
How many boxes of flooring do I need?
Divide the waste-inclusive area by the coverage printed on the box — commonly 17–24 ft² for laminate and LVP. The default room needs 12 twenty-square-foot boxes; a different box size recomputes instantly.
Do I need underlayment under laminate or vinyl plank?
Only when the plank has no attached pad: bare-bottom laminate wants a foam underlayment (about 100 ft² a roll — 3 rolls for the default room), while most modern LVP ships with the pad attached. Untick the box and the roll line drops out.
Which way should flooring planks run?
Usually parallel to the longest wall, or in line with the main sight line as you enter — it makes the room read longer and hides seams. Run planks perpendicular to the floor joists on a wood subfloor for stability. Diagonal and herringbone are design choices that cost extra waste, so bump the allowance to 15%.
How much does new flooring cost?
Material in 2026: vinyl plank about $2–5 per ft², laminate $1–4, engineered hardwood $4–9, solid hardwood $5–12. The default room is $720 at the editable $3 figure — installed, add roughly $2–5 per ft² for labor.
