How this CFM calculator works

Ventilation starts with one identity — flow equals volume times how often you want that volume replaced:

CFM = L × W × H × ACH ÷ 60 · volume in ft³, air changes per hour
L/s = CFM × 0.4719 · m³/h = CFM × 1.699

At the defaults — a 12 × 12 ft room, 8 ft ceiling, 6 air changes per hour — the required airflow is 115 CFM (54 L/s, 196 m³/h); the full chain is in the worked example below. Two inputs move it: the room volume and the air-change target, and because it works from volume, a tall ceiling raises the CFM a floor-area rule of thumb would miss.

CFM, ACH, and volume — the three terms

Ventilation talk mixes three quantities that are easy to confuse. Keep them straight and the sizing is one line of arithmetic:

  • Volume (ft³): length × width × height — the air the room holds. Everything starts here, which is why ceiling height counts as much as floor area.
  • ACH — air changes per hour: how many times you replace the room’s whole air in an hour. A comfort target, set by how the room is used.
  • CFM — cubic feet per minute: the flow rate a fan or duct actually moves — the number on the box you buy.
  • The bridge: CFM = volume × ACH ÷ 60. The same fan gives a small room more air changes than a big one — measure the room first.

How many air changes per hour does a room need?

The air-change target is the judgment call; the rest is fixed by the room. These are comfort rules of thumb — code and equipment specs override them where they apply:

  • Bedrooms 5–6: low turnover for sleeping spaces; quiet matters more than volume.
  • Living rooms & offices 6–8: the everyday comfort band for occupied rooms.
  • Kitchens 7–8: higher, for cooking heat and odor — a range hood handles the spikes.
  • Bathrooms 6–8: to clear moisture; size the exhaust fan to the larger of ACH and the HVI 1-CFM-per-ft² rule.
  • Basements 3–4: lower turnover, but watch humidity and radon, which have their own rules.

How to size airflow for a room

  1. Measure length, width and height in feet — height is not optional, since volume drives the result.
  2. Pick the air-change target for the room’s use from the ACH guide, or type a code-required rate.
  3. Read the CFM, plus L/s and m³/h for equipment spec’d in metric.
  4. Cross-check a bath fan against the HVI 1 CFM/ft² rule and size to the larger number.
  5. Add for duct losses — pick a fan rated a step above the bare CFM so long or restrictive runs still deliver it.

Worked example: CFM for a 12 × 12 room

The default, worked line by line — a 12 × 12 ft room, 8 ft ceiling, 6 air changes per hour:

volume = 12 × 12 × 8 = 1,152 ft³
per hour = 1,152 × 6 = 6,912 ft³
CFM = 6,912 ÷ 60 = 115 CFM
metric = 115 × 0.472 = 54 L/s · 115 × 1.699 = 196 m³/h

Halve the air-change target and the fan halves with it — the relationship is linear, so 3 ACH would want about 58 CFM. Raise the ceiling to 10 ft instead and the volume climbs to 1,440 ft³, pushing the same 6 ACH target to 144 CFM. That ceiling sensitivity is the whole reason the tool asks for height rather than floor area. It also cuts both ways on a fan quote: a supply register rated at 120 CFM comfortably covers this room, but the same register in a vaulted space would fall short, so always size against the room’s real volume rather than a floor-area chart.

What this CFM figure doesn’t account for

This is the airflow a room needs — a clean starting point, not a duct design. Real systems have to add for:

  • Duct losses. Long, kinked or undersized runs cut delivered airflow; a fan’s rated CFM is measured at zero static.
  • Static pressure. Filters, grilles and elbows all rob flow — size the equipment above the bare number.
  • Code minimums. ASHRAE 62.2 whole-house rates and local mechanical code can require more than a comfort ACH.
  • Make-up air. A big exhaust fan needs a path for replacement air, or it starves and back-drafts.
  • Heating and cooling load. Comfort ventilation is not the same as a Manual J load calculation for sizing the furnace or AC.

How do you calculate CFM for a room?

CFM = room volume (ft³) × air changes per hour ÷ 60. A 12 × 12 ft room with an 8 ft ceiling is 1,152 ft³; at 6 ACH that needs 115 CFM. The calculator does the division and the metric conversions.

How many air changes per hour should a room have?

What size bathroom exhaust fan do I need?

The HVI rule is 1 CFM per square foot of floor with a 50 CFM minimum — an 8 × 10 bath wants 80 CFM. By air changes, the same room at 8 ACH computes to 85 CFM; size to the larger and vent it outdoors, never into the attic.

What is the difference between CFM and ACH?

CFM is a flow rate — cubic feet moved per minute. ACH counts how many times the room's whole volume is replaced in an hour. They convert through volume: ACH = CFM × 60 ÷ ft³, which is why the same fan gives a small room far more air changes than a big one.

How many CFM per square foot?

At 8 ft ceilings, 1 ACH is 0.133 CFM/ft² — so the common 6 ACH target is about 0.8 CFM per square foot of floor. Taller ceilings need proportionally more; that is why the calculator works from volume, not floor area.

How many CFM for a 10x12 bedroom?

A 10 × 12 ft bedroom with an 8 ft ceiling is 960 ft³; at the 5–6 ACH comfort range for bedrooms that is 80 to 96 CFM. Size a supply register or fresh-air run to the upper end, and remember a ceiling fan moves air within the room but does not ventilate it — that takes outdoor air.
