How to convert cubic yards to tons

Yards measure volume and tons measure weight, so the bridge is always a density — and the density belongs to the material, not the math:

tons = yd³ × lb/yd³ ÷ 2,000 · short tons
yards = tons ÷ lb/yd³ × 2,000 · the reverse trip

At the defaults — 3 yd³ of crushed gravel at 2,800 lb per yard — the load weighs 4.2 tons, or 3.81 metric tonnes; the full chain is in the worked example below. The one number you have to get right is the density, because a yard of mulch and a yard of concrete differ by five times in weight.

Why the material sets the weight

Yards measure the space a pile takes up; tons measure what it weighs. The bridge between them is density — pounds per cubic yard — and it climbs from featherweight mulch to dense concrete:

  • Concrete — 4,050 lb/yd³ (2.03 tons): the heavy end; priced by the yard, not the ton, on the slab calculator.
  • Asphalt, compacted — 3,915 lb (1.96 tons): paving mix, sold by the ton on the asphalt calculator.
  • Crushed stone & gravel — 2,800 lb (1.4 tons): the aggregate default; the gravel calculator prices it.
  • Sand, limestone, river rock — 2,700 lb (1.35 tons): the mid-weight cluster.
  • Fill dirt 2,200, topsoil 2,000, mulch 800: the light end — soil and organics, where a yard is a ton or less.

The practical upshot is which unit the supplier quotes: dense materials like stone and asphalt sell by the ton, so the scale settles the bill, while lighter, bulkier ones like mulch and topsoil sell by the yard, because weighing them would just tax the buyer for damp weather. This converter is what lets you line up a per-ton quote against a per-yard one and compare the two honestly.

When you need yards, and when you need tons

The reason this converter exists is that the industry measures the same pile two ways, and the paperwork rarely matches the takeoff:

  • You measured a volume: a bed 20 × 10 ft at 3 in gives you yards — convert to tons because the quarry sells by weight.
  • The quote is per ton: aggregate, rip-rap and asphalt price by the ton; convert your yardage to compare bids.
  • The quote is per yard: concrete, topsoil and mulch usually price by the yard; you may only need tons for hauling.
  • You’re checking a delivery: the scale ticket reads in tons — convert your ordered yards to know what should be on it.

How to convert cubic yards to tons

  1. Get the cubic yards — from a supplier quote, or from dimensions on the cubic yard calculator first.
  2. Pick the material so the right density applies; this is the step that decides the answer.
  3. Read the tons — yards × lb/yd³ ÷ 2,000 — plus pounds and metric tonnes for spec sheets that want them.
  4. Use the reverse figure — cubic yards per ton — when a quote is priced by the ton and you need to compare.
  5. Enter a per-ton price to turn the weight straight into a material cost for the bid.

Worked example: 3 cubic yards of gravel in tons

The default, worked line by line — 3 yd³ of crushed gravel at 2,800 lb per yard, $45 a ton:

Swap the material to mulch and the identical three yards weigh just 1.2 tons — same volume, a third of the weight, because density is doing all the work. That is the whole reason there is no single “yards to tons” number: the pile hasn’t changed size, only what it’s made of.

What this conversion doesn’t account for

The math is exact once the density is fixed — but the density itself is an estimate, and a few real-world things move the scale:

  • Moisture. Wet sand and soil weigh up to 15% more than the dry averages here — the biggest single variable.
  • Compaction and gradation. How tightly a material packs shifts its pounds per yard; quarry figures vary by source.
  • Short ton vs tonne. US suppliers sell 2,000-lb short tons; a metric tonne is 2,204.6 lb — about 10% heavier, shown as tonnes.
  • Waste and rounding. This converts a clean volume; add your own allowance and round to how the material is sold.
  • The scale ticket. The weighed load at delivery governs the invoice — these figures size the order, not settle it.

How many tons are in a cubic yard?

Between 0.4 and 2 depending on the material: crushed gravel is about 1.4 tons per cubic yard, sand and limestone 1.35, topsoil 1, mulch only 0.4 — while concrete tips 2.03. There is no single yards-to-tons number; pick the material and the converter applies its density.

How many yards in a ton of gravel?

About 0.71 cubic yards — a short ton of crushed stone at 2,800 lb per cubic yard. Put differently, one full yard of gravel weighs 1.4 tons, so a ton is a bit over two-thirds of a yard.

How do I convert cubic yards to tons?
