How this shingle calculator works
Shingles are sold in bundles, three to the square (100 ft² of roof). The calculator gets your true roof area from the ground: footprint × the pitch multiplier, then waste, then whole bundles:
bundles = squares × (1 + waste%) × 3, rounded up
Underlayment rides the same squares at 10 per synthetic roll, and the cost line prices the bundles at whatever your supplier quotes. At the defaults — a 40 × 30 ft footprint at 6:12 — that’s 45 bundles and about $1,890; the line-by-line math is in the worked example below.
What goes on a shingle roof besides shingles?
Field bundles are the big line, but a shingle roof is a system installed in a strict order — and the small items are what keep the water out at the edges:
Roof deck (sheathing)
The plywood or OSB everything nails to. Sound decks get reshingled; spongy or delaminated spots get replaced sheet by sheet — the roof sheathing calculator counts the 4×8s if you’re re-decking.
Drip edge
Metal edging around the entire perimeter: under the underlayment at the eaves, over it at the rakes, so water always lands on top of the next layer down. Sold in 10 ft sticks.
Ice and water barrier
Self-adhering membrane at the eaves in cold climates — code wants it from the edge to 24 in inside the warm wall (IRC R905.1.2) — plus valleys and around penetrations everywhere.
Underlayment
Synthetic rolls (10 squares each, typically) or old-school felt across the whole deck — the backup layer that keeps a roof dry between tear-off and shingles, and under wind-driven rain for the rest of its life.
Starter strips
Adhesive-edged starter courses along eaves and rakes give the first shingle row something to seal to. Cutting field shingles into starters works but wastes bundles — dedicated starter rolls are cheaper per foot.
Field shingles and ridge caps
The bundles this calculator counts, nailed on the manufacturer’s line, four to six nails each — then pre-cut cap shingles over ridges and hips, sold in their own bundles that cover about 25–35 lf each.
Ventilation and flashing
Ridge vent with matching soffit intake keeps the attic — and the shingles — cool, and metal flashing does the actual waterproofing at walls, chimneys and valleys. Both are job-specific lines outside this count.
Which shingles should you buy?
Architectural shingles are the default answer in 2026 — 3-tabs survive on price alone, and the designer tier is a look, not a performance class:
- 3-tab: the flat, single-layer economy shingle — lightest, cheapest, shortest-lived, and increasingly a repair-match product rather than a whole-roof choice.
- Architectural (laminated): two bonded layers, deeper shadow lines, better wind ratings, the market standard. Three bundles per square, which is what this calculator assumes.
- Designer / luxury: heavier slate- and shake-look laminates at 4–5 bundles per square — recount by the wrapper before ordering.
- Impact-rated (Class 4): the hail-country upgrade; many insurers discount premiums for it, which can pay the difference.
- Algae-resistant (AR): copper-dosed granules that keep humid-climate roofs from streaking black — usually a no-cost option worth specifying.

How to measure a roof for shingles
The whole takeoff happens on the ground — footprint, pitch, and an honest waste number. Dimension fields take feet-inches (40, 40 ft 6 in) or metric (12 m).
- Measure the footprint including overhangs — the roof edge, not the wall line. Walk the two sides and add the eave projection each way.
- Get the pitch with a level and tape or the roof pitch calculator — the multiplier it produces is what stretches footprint into true roof area.
- Complex roof? Take off each plane separately — length × slope width per plane — and sum them; L-shaped ranches and dormered capes hide a surprising amount of area.
- Set waste honestly: 10% on straight gables, 15% with hips, valleys or dormers — valley cuts eat shingles.
- Count the linear extras while you’re out there: eaves and rakes for starter and drip edge, ridges and hips for cap bundles.
- Enter the bundle quote — and check whether it’s per bundle or per square; suppliers use both, three bundles apart.
Worked example: shingles for a 40 × 30 ft roof
The defaults, worked line by line — 1,200 ft² of footprint at 6:12, 10% waste, $42 a bundle:
multiplier @ 6:12 = √(1 + 0.5²) = 1.118
roof = 1,200 × 1.118 = 1,342 ft² = 13.42 squares
buy = 13.42 × 1.10 = 14.76 squares
bundles = 14.76 × 3 = 44.3 → 45 bundles
underlayment = 14.76 ÷ 10 = 1.5 → 2 rolls
cost = 45 × $42 = $1,890
The multiplier is the line homeowners miss: those 142 extra square feet of slope are real shingles, and they grow with pitch — the same footprint at 8:12 orders 48 bundles. When a contractor’s square count beats your footprint math, the pitch multiplier is almost always the difference.
What this shingle estimate doesn’t include
Bundles and underlayment are the count here. A reroof ticket carries the rest — small lines that add up to real money:
- Tear-off and disposal. Stripping the old layer and the dumpster — commonly $1–2 per ft² of roof, more per extra layer.
- Starter, cap and nails. Starter along eaves and rakes, cap bundles over ridges and hips, ~320 nails a square.
- Ice and water barrier at eaves, valleys and penetrations where climate or code demands it.
- Flashing. Step, counter, chimney, and valley metal — the actual waterproofing, priced per piece and per hour.
- Deck repairs. A contingency of a few sheets; rot doesn’t show until the shingles are off.
- Ventilation. Ridge vent, boots and intake work while the roof is open.
- Labor. Installation is most of a roofing bill — $450–700 per square installed is the common 2026 all-in range.

How many bundles of shingles are in a square?
Three bundles cover one square — 100 ft² of roof — for standard architectural shingles, each bundle covering about 33 ft². Some heavyweight and designer lines run 4–5 bundles per square; the wrapper states the coverage.
How many shingles do I need for a 1,200 sq ft roof footprint?
At a 6:12 pitch the true roof area is 1,200 × 1.118 = about 1,342 ft² — 13.4 squares. With 10% waste that is 45 bundles, plus 2 rolls of synthetic underlayment. The calculator recomputes for your pitch and waste.
How many squares is the average roof?
Most single-family homes land between 15 and 25 squares of actual roof surface — a 1,500–2,000 ft² footprint at common pitches. That is 45–75 bundles before waste, which is why shingles arrive on a boom truck, not in a hatchback.
How much does a square of shingles cost in 2026?
Architectural shingles run roughly $120–150 per square in materials ($40–50 a bundle), before underlayment, starter, caps, nails and disposal. Installed, most markets see $450–700 per square depending on pitch and tear-off.
How do I measure my roof for shingles from the ground?
Measure the building footprint including overhangs, multiply by the pitch multiplier (1.118 for 6:12 — the pitch calculator gives you the number), and you have roof area without leaving the ground. Complex hip-and-valley roofs deserve a plane-by-plane takeoff and 15% waste.
Can you put new shingles over old shingles?
The IRC allows one overlay — never a third layer — and only over a flat, sound single layer (R908.3). It saves the tear-off cost but hides the deck, voids some warranties, telegraphs every hump, and doubles the disposal bill next time. Most reroofs are worth stripping.
How many nails per square of shingles?
Four nails per shingle standard — about 320 nails per square — and six per shingle (≈480) in high-wind zones or where the manufacturer requires it. That is roughly 2½ lb of coil nails per square at four-per.
How long do architectural shingles last?
Plan on 20–25 real-world years for a standard architectural shingle — the "30-year" and "lifetime" labels describe warranty tiers, not the calendar. Heat, hail and poor attic ventilation shorten the run; ventilation and algae-resistant granules stretch it.
